Leven CE (VC) Primary School

Enriching Life through Learning

Leven CE (VC) Primary School
South Street, HU17 5NX
Originally built in 1866 as the Leven Girls' School, the current village Primary school has undergone numerous improvement projects over the years to keep up with the expansion of the village population and with the technological revolution.

The school serves the parishes of Leven and Catwick, and there are currently 180 children on the roll, but this is expected to rise with the planned housing developments in the village.

The school has a staff of thirty (full & part-time), including teachers, teaching assistants administration staff, kitchen staff, Midday Supervisors, a caretaker and a cleaner.

They are supported by an enthusiastic governing body and a hard working PTFA.

The school is also responsible for the management of the school kitchen, which also provides a valuable service to our school community. The school buildings are often used in the evenings for Adult Education classes as well as Parish Council meetings.

Leven P.T.F.A.
The P.T.F.A. exists primarily to support the school by raising extra funds.

They have in the past raised monies for help towards the purchase of an interactive white-board, new library, BBQ, low level adventure play area and digital camera.

They purchase the school books and hymn books on a yearly basis, and also provide funding for sheet music, the Year 6 Drama Day, netball posts, recorder books, storage facilities for musical instruments and activity equipment for play times.

Monies raised have also helped towards both Literacy and Numeracy, to purchase extra useful items for the school, and at Christmas, provide a tree and entertainment for the children with a magician and disco.

As you can see, the money raised through the efforts of the PTFA go a long way to making our children's time at school more rewarding and by boosting the annual school budget, and are helping the school do more for our children.

The Pre-School is run by qualified staff as set out in The Statutory Framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage and is regularly Inspected by Ofsted providing play and education not only for the children of Leven but also the children from surrounding villages.

Last ofsted Inspection - 2 July 2015 - where Leven Pre-School was Judged as “Good” with strengths in parent partnership, safeguarding, links with school, children’s behaviour, teaching and interactions with children developing their communication and language,

and supporting children with special educational needs.

All children are supported in developing their potential through means of child initiated play offering appropriate activities and investigation opportunities with a high level of individual adult input.  The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum leads to nationally approved learning outcomes, and prepares children to progress with confidence to the National Curriculum at the age of five.

Learning is based around child initiated play.  With activities such as messy play area allows the children to have free choice of painting equipment and materials for creating pictures throughout the day.  The can play with and mould the wet sand, they can pour and used water wheels with the dry sand.  We play in the water by adding textures and smells, then using resources we can scoop, fill and transport the water.  Learn to manipulate a variety of malleable substances such as playdough and clay.

The construction, small world and role play area have been extended so that children can initiate and extend their own play through their imagination, whilst increasing their fine motor skills in building.  Group play encourages their social and communication skills, and their development of language for thinking.  Whilst having adult input during music time and planned focused group activities and games to encourage and develop their development and understanding.

The Pre-school has a good sized securely fenced outdoor play area for physical play on wheeled toys and a wide variety of outdoor play equipment, (such as tunnels, soft play, obstacle courses, stepping stones and stilts for, balancing, bats and balls, hoops for hand eye co-ordination. We have a water tray/sand pit with toys and tools which creates opportunity for imaginative play and language and communication.  We have use of the play park, sports field and local resources like the canal, small holdings, shops, and library.

Recommendations from Ofsted during the inspection, has led to changing planning for the outdoor environment.  Giving more opportunities for children through self initiated play to access basic mathematical activities which include, counting and number  recognition, playing with shapes/sizes and measuring,  We have recently added a ‘mud kitchen’ to our outdoor play which creates imaginative and creative play, and more opportunities for language and communication amongst the children

Outside area of Investigation – The Nature Park giving the children opportunity to actively explore their environment encouraging lots of investigative, communication and social skills.  To identify and learn the life cycles of  the wildlife living in the park.  To have first hand experiences of the change of seasons and the effect it has on the flowers and plants within our environment.  There is also a small area cleared for den building with natural resources.  This is a great opportunity for children to begin to assess risk in a safe environment.

We are very fortunate in that if the weather is unsuitable for outdoor play and investigation the Playing Fields Association allows us the use of the empty sports hall for physical play and action.

Research done by the pre-school learning alliance shows that children learn better when their parents are involved.  The pre-school recognises that  parents  are the most important educators of their children, and as a parent committee run group offers this involvement by giving a say on how their children’s education is delivered and offers an opportunity to attend sessions to see how their children achieve and learn, joining in with their play and activities.
